Tampa Bay Business Journal
Nearly seven out of 10 seniors 65 years and older care more about their health and well being than about their finances, a report by SecureHorizons said.
The telephone survey polled 750 seniors in 10 different markets, including Tampa, about their concerns in the later years.
After health, Tampa seniors ranked personal finances most important, followed by spirituality, mental health and ability to care for themselves as most important. Nationally health and well being ranked first, followed by spirituality, self-care, mental health and personal finances.
Eighty percent of seniors reported that they keep up to date on the latest health news. Doctors, at 43 percent are the most popular source of health information for seniors. The Internet (25 percent) is the second most common resource consulted by seniors, although younger respondents were more likely to go online for health answers than older ones.
Concern about end of life planning is higher than the national average in Tampa, with 47 percent of those surveyed concerned, compared with 38 percent nationally.
Of the health and well-being concerns, maintaining physical independence and mobility is of prime concern to Tampa seniors, with the availability of affordable prescription drugs the second and finding ways to stay healthy the third most important attribute.
