  • FCC adopts new pretexting rules
Under new FCC rules, telecom companies, as well as other carriers, will have to get customer permission before releasing personal information to third parties and will also be required to prove to regulators each year that they are in compliance. "We are deeply concerned that the FCC is taking an overly broad approach," USTelecom CEO Walter McCormick said. "This is an extremely anti-consumer outcome." • USTelecom Calls Pretexting Order "Anti-Consumer"
The FCC released new rules Monday for securing consumer proprietary network information (CPNI). USTelecom CEO Walter McCormick said telecom companies took their customers' privacy seriously and expressed concern about the FCC's overly broad approach. McCormick said the rules were "anti-consumer" and went far beyond protecting the legitimate privacy interests of call-detail information to preventing any marketing of new services, bundled offerings and new applications that can save consumers money.
