Dobson Communications brings cell phones to small-town folks. The company provides wireless service to more than 1.5 million subscribers in primarily rural and suburban areas of 17 states. Through principal subsidiaries Cellular One (formerly Dobson Cellular) and American Cellular, Dobson offers wireless voice and data services through its networks that utilize Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), and TDMA (time division multiple access) digital technologies. The family of chairman Everett Dobson owns a nearly 60% controlling interest in the company. Dobson agreed to be acquired by AT&T for $2.8 billion in mid-2007.
