Kolkata, Mar 21 : Kolkata may soon get television channels over telephone lines at broadband speed. Pune is the only Indian city to have the service so far.
Calcutta Telephones, which is under BSNL, may launch Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) in June, according to chief general manager SK Chakraborty.
"Consumers will get DVD quality picture and CD quality sound via their IPTV connections. Even with a 600kbps bandwidth, there will not be any disturbance," he said.
BSNL has spent over Rs 30 crore to implement the project in 898 cities and towns at a cost of Rs 800 crore.
Calcutta Telephones will be offering the basic home package to its 13.7 lakh fixed line subscribers with a 2mbps bandwidth at a cost of Rs 199 per month.
The company is targeting a customer base of about 2.25 lakh initially.
To start with, Calcutta Telephones will have a library of around 5000 moves in English, Hindi and Bengali. Value-added services like video-on-demand will also be available.
The soft launch of the platform will take place in April, according to SK Bhaduri, GM of marketing, Calcutta Telephones. "This is as much as I can tell you."
