Napster is back, and now it's legal. The company had sparked a national debate on copyright protection with its file swapping software that once allowed users to freely trade MP3 files online. Napster lost a copyright infringement court battle against the major record labels in 2001, and subsequently went offline to develop a subscription service. CD-burning software maker Roxio later purchased Napster's assets for about $5 million, rescuing the company from Chapter 7 liquidation. Roxio combined Napster with pressplay (which Roxio purchased in 2003) and relaunched the brand as an online service that lets users legally download music from its library for 99 cents a song.
