SureWest Communications wants to be a sure bet for communications in northern California. The company's core telecommunications segment (which includes subsidiary SureWest Telephone) provides local and long-distance phone service and through more than 100,000 access lines in Placer and Sacramento counties. It also offers network access and exchange services to other carriers while its broadband unit offers Internet and digital video services to both business and residential customers in the Sacramento area. The company exited the wireless services business in 2008 when it sold the operations of SureWest Wireless, which provided service to about 50,000 subscribers, to Verizon.
