Should poor trans woman have to pay fee for name change?
The Illinois Supreme Court heard arguments last week on whether Daunn Turner, a transgender woman with a low income, should have to pay a $450 fee to change her name. Turner allegedly was told by a lower-court judge that he would not agree to "spending the county's money on something like this."
