LOS ANGELES -- Univision Communications Inc. has dropped a lawsuit that sought to stop Nielsen Media Research from using a new television rating system in the Spanish-language broadcaster's largest market.
The decision represents a victory for Nielsen, a unit of Dutch VNU NV, which has spent the past six months fending off a campaign from minority groups and television stations against its local "people meter," an electronic device for counting TV audiences that replaces handwritten diaries kept by viewers.
The data produced by the local people meter are critical to the television industry because they determine advertising rates.
